Carlos Saya: The acquisition of Polymount's Twinlock business by tesa, in March, was a remarkable achievement for a company that entered the market over 15 years ago with a single product: the self-adhesive Twinlock sleeve. In that time, the Twinlock went from having a market share of about 1% to the 20% it enjoys today. And interest is still growing, a fact that has not been missed by tape manufacturers.
Indeed, as Polymount's owner and CEO Jan Willem Boers said, "When tesa approached us, there was an immediate chemistry; tesa is interested for the right reasons and that will continue to grow the business." That sentiment was echoed by one of tesa's board members, Dr Norman Goldberg, who sees the advantages the Twinlock provides to a packaging industry that is heavily investing in sustainable solutions. Indeed, the tesa Twinlock® sleeve is the only proven reusable solution in plate mounting. Actually, it complements our Softprint tape product range; you could say we offer the best of both worlds now. Customers can choose tape or sleeve.
With the addition of tesa Twinlock to our product range, we are extending our capabilities to cater to the preferences and individual needs of flexographic printers. The unique concept of tesa Twinlock is to provide sustainable and reusable plate-mounting solutions for cost-efficient and consistency in high-printing.
The basis for this technology begins with the selection of a base sleeve or cylinder from the customer's preferred supplier. We then add a polyurethane (PU) foam layer on to the base sleeve. The PU foam is coated with a unique polymer that has characteristics that allow it to remain permanently tacky. When proper cleaning and handling procedures are observed, there is no limit to how many times tesa Twinlock can be used.
Out of the three densities that we offer, 85% of all the sleeves we make have a medium hardness. Nevertheless, the three different hardness levels allow complete flexibility for the customer. The different thickness layers of the tesa Twinlock coating enables us to deliver the most accurate sleeve based on your existing production needs.
Each density of our adhesive plate-mounting sleeves provides exceptional print quality. Even after long press times, the sleeves produce accurate and reliable results. This consistent print quality is attributable to our open-cell foam structure, which allows the product to absorb bouncing effects to improve print quality. A second critical factor that influences print quality is our strict diameter tolerances. We also use laser technology to measure our sleeves and ensure they meet your exact requirements. With our carefully crafted tesa Twinlock, we enable high printing speeds and lasting print quality without the need of adjustments for our customers.
The main advantage of this plate-mounting solution is its reusability. When best practices are observed, our reusable sleeves have the potential to run endlessly. In most cases, our tesa Twinlock sleeves only need to be recoated when physical damage occurs to the base sleeve or coating. This allows flexo printers to benefit from a lower running cost and faster return on investment, as well as a more precise estimate of input production costs and an overall reduction in the customer's carbon footprint.
