Managing director Dalibor Schuman talks to Packaging & Converting Intelligence about the company's work and the innovations that will be presented at this year's drupa print fair in Düsseldorf.


Who do you regard as your most important clients?

Dalibor Schuman: On the one hand, it's all of the major foil and film converting groups that are producing lids and labels on Berhalter equipment. But just as important are the small and medium-sized companies with individualised requirements that use Berhalter die-cutting systems. We delight in giving each client full attention and providing them with a valuable service. We regard all Berhalter customers as high profile. We wish to invest in long-lasting relationships with them and help them to achieve success.

What are the main advantages of using your new LABEL-light tool concept?

Berhalter has introduced a new die-cutting tool concept for in-mould labels (IML). The new LABEL-light tool offers advantages such as favourable costs and short lead times. The LABEL-light punching tool combines the advantages of flatbed die cutting, such as unique print-to-die registration and perfect handling properties, with affordable tooling.

The cost for a LABEL-light punching tool is 70% lower compared with a traditional punching tool, even when allowing a label contour correction of approximately 0.5mm, which means there is no need for regrinding a LABEL-light tool. The cutting components can be exchanged by the operators to continue production immediately. This punching tool has been designed especially for a cost-efficient production of small to medium-sized IML label volumes.

How are expectations about the look of a lid changing?

Styles change constantly and fresh images are always in demand. There are great expectations about a consumer product generally and the look of a packaging specifically. Therefore, the look of a lid has become a significant aspect to consider. Brand-owners request differentiation from standard lids so that their products have a special or premium look. By using Berhalter's die-cutting systems, it is possible to provide every marketing solution without having to impose restrictions on the material and design of the packaging.

Can you tell us a bit about the SMARTembosser?

The SMARTembosser is a logical evolution for pre-cut lids. As the name suggests, it's a smart way to produce embossed lids. This patented system is unique and offers fantastic opportunities for rim embossing, logo embossing and de-embossing pre-cut lids. The SMARTembosser makes every lid look special and provides additional technical advantages.

With the rim-embossing application, embossing is done only in the sealing area of the rim, and causes the lid to shine brighter and the colour to edge more clearly. Smaller letters can be printed on the package, which is important for product placement and for printing the necessary food regulations.

The SMARTembosser for rim-embossed lids increases the productivity of filling and sealing machines. The logo-embossing and de-embossing applications give our customers the opportunity to produce pre-cut lids, while highlighting a brand's logo, a specific sign or relevant writing. Using SMARTembosser technology means that pre-cut lids can be printed with intense colours, with more space for graphics and product information, and look more brilliant than ever before.
