DSM is a leading specialist supplier of polyamides, polyesters and thermoplastic co-polymers for flexible packaging applications - and one of the fastest growing divisions within Royal DSM: the Netherlands-headquartered global science-based corporation active in health, nutrition and materials.
DSM offers a unique portfolio of specialty and barrier films, able to deliver highest productivity and top quality in cast, blown film and biaxial (BOPA) processes for monolayer and multilayer constructions.
Working in partnership with converters, retailers and brand owners, DSM delivers innovative solutions that improve performance in food; pharmaceuticals & medical; and industrial packaging.
DSM's leadership in barrier and protective film as well as specialty packaging technologies is helping the entire value chain - from consumers to brands; food processors and film converters - to provide better solutions to the world's rapidly changing food packaging needs by facilitating greater convenience and increasing functionality.
Global population growth, exacerbated by increased urbanization, is leading to increased demand for processed food in safe, easily accessible and sustainable packaging - whilst lifestyle changes are driving consumption of a greater number and variety of prepared foods.
A widely-respected proven track record of constantly evolving technological expertise uniquely qualifies DSM to respond to the global challenge of reducing food and packaging waste by developing smart solutions that extend shelf-life and safely manage the transition of fresh produce from farm to fork.
According to the UN's Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO), over 1.3bn tonnes of food per annum is either lost or wasted: approximately one-third of all of the food produced annually for human consumption. As much as 50% of all crops grown in developing countries never manage the transition from farm to fork. Meanwhile, in the more industrialised countries perfectly good food is regularly discarded unwrapped. It's reckoned, for example, that North American households habitually throw away untouched the equivalent of a day's worth of all the food purchased each week; adding up to $600 per annum per household (comprising a family of four).
Dovetailing performance materials with world-class service and support, DSM is taking the lead in waging war on waste - and taking flexible packaging into a greener and cleaner era.
Polyamide provides optimum barrier protection against oxygen in co-extruded structures, and puncture resistance in co-extruded or laminated multi-layer film structures. It is especially appropriate for the packaging of freshly produced meat, fish and cheese.
Akulon polyamide demonstrates a number of differentiating properties:
Providing a tough, puncture-resistant monolithic health barrier with excellent film characteristics, DSM's co-polyester Arnitel resins exemplify the high CO² / low O² permeability ratio.
Arnitel's key point of difference in comparison with competitive resins, however, is its unique facility for withstanding an extremely wide temperature range from - 40 ? C up to + 240 ? C, making it equally as ideal for shock freezing as for the microwave.
Arnitel's characteristic pliable feel is achieved by replacing the resin's soft block element with canola oil - the ingredient ensuring its elimination of any brittleness at low temperatures.
First established as a coal mining operation 110 years ago (1902), DSM has evolved via progressive diversification and acquisition within the broader chemicals sector into a global life and materials sciences company active in health, nutrition and materials, whose aim is to use its science and innovation in partnership with film converters and end-users to develop products and solutions that make a positive difference to peoples' lives.
Royal DSM maintains over 200 manufacturing sites in Europe; North and Latin America; India and China; manned by over 22,000 employees and generating annual sales in excess of €9bn.
DSM is firmly committed to innovation as the key driver to secure future growth, and is aiming for it to be directly responsible for one-fifth of total sales by 2015.
