Elopak - The natural choice

In 2017, Elopak introduced the first gable-top cartons with natural brown board for fresh products. One year on, the Pure-Pak carton with natural brown board has now been launched for the aseptic market.

The Pure-Pak cartons with natural brown board have one less layer compared with the well-known white cartons. The new cartons retain the natural brown colour of the wood fibres and has a visible fibre structure. This results in a reduced carbon footprint and weight, providing a naturally different, sustainable, and authentic package that meets demand for growing trends in ethical, ecological and organic products.

The highly distinctive, natural look and feel of the carton supports the sustainable values of more eco-friendly and organic products, bringing outstanding shelf presence.

On shelves across Europe

The Pure-Pak carton with natural brown board for fresh products has been launched by global-brand Arla across European markets, and is also successfully on the shelf in the Baltics, Iceland and for a range of brands in Germany.

Norway's Rørosmeieriet dairy has recently introduced its fresh organic milk in Pure-Pak cartons with natural brown board. This was the dairy's latest move in its pioneering sustainable strategy - its vision is: 'In line with nature'. "When we change something, we want to contribute to more sustainability every time," says Trond V Lund, dairy manager at Rørosmeieriet Dairy.

The natural brown board is a good example of Elopak's continuous focus on developing and offering products with an improved environmental profile.

More environmental benefits

The natural brown board cartons are recyclable through existing collection and recycling facilities. They are also available in combination with 100% forest-based renewable PE and as certified-carbon-neutral packaging.

Elopak's environmental director Marianne Groven says, "The natural brown board is a good example of Elopak's continuous focus on developing and offering products with an improved environmental profile. With this latest launch, Elopak is expanding its portfolio, enabling added value UHT milk and ambient juice products, plus new emerging aseptic markets, in order to be sustainable, authentic and naturally different."

The new aseptic Pure-Pak carton is available in 1,000, 750, and 500ml, and runs on the E-PS120A aseptic filling machine. As part of continuous development, Elopak is testing new carton sizes, barriers and features for the natural brown board.

The new aseptic Pure-Pak cartons with natural brown board can be applied to Elopak's existing aseptic filling technology. Elopak's E-PS120A filling machine enables dairy and fruit juice companies to efficiently fill low and high-pH products in up to three carton sizes.

"The fresh Pure-Pak carton with natural brown board is a success story, which we follow up now with the launch of an aseptic solution," says Paul Sweeting, director strategic marketing and product management at Elopak. "There is a constantly growing demand for more differentiation and innovative packaging solutions. The natural look and feel of the natural brown board has been shown to boost brand value. Products with an environmentally friendly packaging are simply more credible for the consumer and, moreover, distinguishable on the shelf."
