Filled polyolefin (FPO) is a unique film for use in the packaging of food and non-food products. The aluminium-free film helps brands to achieve their sustainability goals, and was conceived by RKW with the well-being of the planet in mind - now and for future generations.
Filled polyolefin (FPO) is a monomaterial made of polymers and chalk-based minerals. It offers a simple replacement of multimaterial packaging solutions while providing equal or enhanced benefits. The mineral film is the perfect answer to traditionally demanding applications. It is highly resistant to water, light and fats, and has great sealability properties, making it the ideal aluminium-free option for the packaging of butter, margarine, cheese, wet wipes and cosmetic creams. Among its many end uses, it can be used in wrapping, pouches, form film and seal, labels, lamination and tags.
While high-energy consumption generally makes manufacturing aluminium and plastic packaging relatively expensive, FPO lowers costs and improves sustainability results. The superior proportion of minerals in this film keeps the use of polymers to a minimum and reduces the overall carbon footprint. The compound and film are manufactured at the same location, reducing carbon emissions in transport and offering the best flexibility in supply chain. Thanks to its look and feel, surface and printability, this film will make any packaged product stand out on shelf.
RKW has a wealth of expertise in mineral-filled masterbatches, films based on polyolefins and customised, ready-to-use compounds. As well as offering a range of off-the-shelf films, RKW produces tailored films to perfectly match customers' particular requirements.
Butter wrappers are generally made from aluminium or aluminium-coated films, but with rising public concern over possible health risks related to aluminium, FPO films offer the ideal alternative to these conventional materials. The aluminium-free alternative offers further advantages when it comes to inspection, as standard metal detectors can be used to identify contaminants.
FPO is produced at RKW Sweden. The production facility has nearly 30 years of experience, is flexible and versatile in its processes, and helps drive innovation forward.
