Protecting consumer health is a top priority for Mayr-Melnhof Karton, a leading producer of cartonboard solutions. When the debate about mineral oil began, the company took the lead in working on a solution with a team of experts with the aim of the highest possible consumer protection. With FOODBOARD, Mayr-Melnhof Karton has developed the next generation of cartonboard, which ensures highest product safety.
FOODBOARD protects packed food against the migration of unintended substances such as mineral oils, phthalates, DIPN and bisphenol A. The barrier offers comprehensive protection from the primary packaging, but also against influences from printing inks and the environment, which can compromise the packed food during transportation, storage and at the point of sale. It provides reliable protection against cross-contamination.
The core element of the new cartonboard is an innovative, and environmentally and consumer-friendly barrier concept. Thereby, packed food is perfectly shielded against defined unintended substances from the packaging environment. This is achieved by a new cartonboard structure and the application of carefully selected migration barriers on the reverse side of the cartonboard during the production process.
Since the end of 2011, in close collaboration with leading international consumer goods producers, extensive long-term, real-life tests (up to 36 months) have been carried out in a wide variety of food segments such as cereals, chocolate, pasta, tea, bakery products, fast food and rice. The results of more than 15,000 internal and external migration analyses confirm conclusively the effectiveness of the functional barrier.
Furthermore, the real-life tests of FOODBOARD demonstrated excellent printing and converting results, as well as the highest packing-line performance. Laboratory analyses and test series of customers confirm a longer shelf life for certain packed foods, top protection from organoleptic influences and a barrier for slightly greasy food.
FOODBOARD is an environmentally friendly, pure cartonboard solution, not an extruded or laminated compound. It is fully recyclable, biodegradable and available with FSC or PEFC certification. The cartonboard secures the ecological benefits of a sustainable packaging economy.
FOODBOARD complies with the European regulations for direct and indirect food contact, and leading independent European institutes have issued declarations of food conformity. FOODBOARD meets the latest statutory requirements of a possible mineral oil regulation from the German Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture. Regardless of statutory regulation, the market demands a migration barrier to maintain consumer confidence and to avoid costly product recalls.
FOODBOARD ensures total confidence in the packed product for consumers and retailers.
Through the use of the FOODBOARD logo on the packaging, companies can communicate their commitment to product safety and thus significantly strengthen consumer confidence and inform authorities of the functional barrier on the shelves.
Mayr-Melnhof Karton has set a new standard for the safety of packed food with FOODBOARD.
